Chambray Fabric

Commonly mistaken for denim, chambray fabric is a cotton plain-weave fabric that is dyed. It looks very similar to denim and most of the time the two can go interchanged. However, chambray is a lot lighter and is woven much differently than denim. It’s great for making light, loose clothing, especially for Summer and is less ideal for thick, long-lasting pieces. For that, you would want to use denim instead.

Chambray is especially great for:

  • Shirts

  • Dresses

  • Blazers

  • Pants

  • Skirts

  • Curtains

Based on countless reviews, we’ve put together a list of some of the best chambray fabrics for a variety of online fabric stores.

  1. Telio Denim Dark Blue Chambray

If you’re looking for a denim-like chambray, you won’t find more similar to denim than this Telio Chambray fabric. The dark blue color makes it perfect for sewing some pants together or a nice “denim jacket.”

This fabric is very sturdy, yet breathable. It’s lightweight and easy to care for which makes it great for embroidery projects.

With most dark denim and chambray fabrics, it’s recommended that you wash the fabric before wearing it as the color can tend to bleed. This means that it should be expected that this color will fade over time and won’t, unfortunately, have the dark blue color forever.

That being said, all the reviews stated they were really pleased with the construction of the fabric.

  1. APC Fabrics Baby Blue Chambray

This chambray fabric is a gorgeous baby blue color and 100% cotton. It’s extremely breathable and on the lighter side so if you’re looking for something thick, this isn’t the fabric for you. It’s sold by yard increments and with good reviews, it’s a great option if you’re looking for a light wash chambray fabric.

  1. Robert Kaufman Worker Chambray

This worker chambray is available in a traditional blue color and a lighter wash blue as well. It’s made from 55% cotton and 45% polyester. It’s easy to work with and incredibly easy to care for. You can machine wash it on cold and tumble dry as well.

It’s sold by the yard and is perfect for making stylish shirts, blouses, dresses, and skirts with a lining. If you’re looking for a great, fool-proof chambray fabric, this is a great option.
