A coverstitch is common in the sewing world since it provides your garment with a professional end result. It’s primarily used for hemming and topstitching knit fabrics. This stitch gives you a professional-looking hem that has two rows of stitching and a serger like stitching on the back. This creates a very elastic and durable stitch and also prevents fabric, like knits , from being stretched out.

The Difference Between a Serger and Coverstitch Machine
Serger machines are known for finishing off hems and seams. However, there is a major difference when it comes to serger sewing machines and coverstitch sewing machines. Most sergers will trim the excess of a seam and sew a run of neat stitches over the edge. A cover stitch machine is a little different from a serger as it has a looper, just like the serger sewing machines do, but without a blade. The purpose of this blade-less looper is to hem your finished garments or create a decorative chain stitching.
A serger machine will not be able to sew a straight stitch and folded hem. This is why a lot of people make the investment in a coverstitch sewing machine.
There are four different types of coverstitch machines on the market today:
- 2-needle
This machine has 2 needles and 1 looper and can sew a 3-thread coverstitch and a single-row chain stitching seam.
- 3-needle
This machine can sew a 2-needle wide and narrow coverstitch, a single needle chainstitch, and a 3-needle coverstitch seam.
- Serger/Coverstitch Combo
This machine, although more expensive, is a great investment as you get all the aspects you would find with a serger sewing machines and with a coverstitch machine. It will not only save you time but space as well.
- Top-Cover Machine
