Suede Fabric

Suede is a very common fabric that you would have come across many times before. It has an almost buttery soft texture to it and is incredibly durable. With its durability, it’s commonly used to make boots and other shoes, handbags, and furniture pieces as well!

Real suede is taken from the inner part of an animal hide and can be seen on the reverse side of the leather. However, the majority of suede you’ll see today is actually “faux suede” and made from polyester or cotton. The way the fibers are stitched together gives the same illusion and feel of suede, without the animal products.

Faux suede has the same characteristics of traditional suede, but it is a lot more resistant to stains, odors, and damage. This is one of the many reasons that it’s becoming a lot more popular and preferred, especially when it comes to upholstery. With faux suede, you can make stunning quilts, jackets, handbags, earrings, slipcovers, window treatments, and even wallets with suede.

At first, working with suede may be fairly simple. Sewing on suede isn’t too difficult, the hard part is finding the right kind of suede for your project.

No need to stress, we have listed some of our favorite suede fabrics that will work with just about any type of project!

  1. Ultrasuede HP Suede Taupe Fabric

This fabric is the perfect combination of luxury and durability making it especially ideal for upholstering your sofa, ottoman, throw pillows, or just about any home decor. It has a very smooth, buttery feeling to it, yet it’s still incredibly durable and holds up really nicely.

With its level of durability, you don’t have to worry about the kids spilling on the sofa or the dog getting up with its muddy paws as it’s resistant to stains and odors. If an accident happens, no need to stress since it can be spot cleaned and wiped down.

The fabric itself is made of 80% polyester and 20% polyurethane. It’s so durable that it has exceeded over 200,000 double rubs, so you know it will hold up against the test of time.

We especially love the taupe color as it goes with just about anything. The width of the fabric is 55 inches and sold by the yard and half yard increments.

The only con about this fabric is that it is a little pricey. However, with how durable it is, the price is definitely worth it.

  1. Fabricut Suede Fabric

This suede fabric is a very unique fabric as it features a woven design, something that isn’t as common in suede fabrics. The fabric is a light brown color that complements just about any style decor. It’s made with a blend of cotton and polyester and is sold by the yard or half yard increments.

The fabric also comes in various colors and textures, but we do love this light brown color since it’s so versatile. We recommend using this fabric as a quilt, for drapes, throw pillows, or to upholster your ottoman. Regardless of what you do with it, it is bound to look absolutely stunning.

The only con about this fabric is that it is dry clean only.

  1. Plastex Fabrics Soft Suede Fabric

This wine color suede fabric is bound to make an impactful statement. This fabric is incredibly soft and comfortable to use for clothing including jackets, and also home decor like a bedspread or throw blanket. Adding some faux leather or faux fur will amplify the outfit and some trim could really elevate the bedspread.

The fabric itself is made from 100% polyester and has a medium weight. It’s sold by yard and half yard and it’s very easy to work with.

The only con about this fabric is that it is dry clean only.

  1. Telio Soho Faux Suede

This black faux suede is buttery soft and extremely lightweight. The faux suede is a woven fabric and features a napped face and smooth, luxurious back. It’s made from 100% polyester and 58” wide. It’s absolutely perfect for lightweight clothing like jackets, vests, skirts, and also used to accent pieces on the collars or cuffs.

To clean this fabric, you should simply wipe it with a damp cloth or dry clean, which can be a pain.

  1. Mengeng Solid Faux Suede

If you’re looking for an affordable faux suede option for smaller sewing projects, this is a great choice. This pack comes with 10 different color options of suede fabric in 9” x 13” sheets. These bright colors are perfect to add some extra dimension to a jacket or skirt or a pop of color on a pillow or upholstered furniture piece.

The fabric itself is soft and comfortable and the matte particles on the surface are neat and not rough.

It’s not as durable or high-quality as some of the other fabrics listed above, but if you’re looking to add a little bit of suede detail to your sewing project, this is a great, affordable option.
