An overlock is a kind of stitch that sews over the edge of a couple of pieces of fabric to create hemming, seams, or edging. There are specific machines known as overlock machines, or Sergers as we call them in North America, which will cut the edges of the cloth as they are fed through the machine.
What is a Serger Sewing Machine?
Serger or Overlocker sewing machines are types of machines that sew over the edge of two pieces of cloth that are ideal for hemming, creating seams, or edging. This machine automatically cuts edges and sews them together. Due to this main purpose, serger sewing machines are extremely popular for creating clothing and other garments that require a lot of professional-looking seams.
What Should It Look Like?
An overlock stitch is a combination of a straight stitch and a zigzag stitch. It uses both a backward and forward motion in a straight line, but in between every set of straight stitches, it also sews a zigzag stitch as well.
This technique is extremely common in garments and clothing and if you’re looking to sew your own clothes or clothing for retail, you are bound to become really familiar with the overlock stitch.
There are specific sewing machines that are better for the overlock stitch than others. It can get rather stressful trying to find the right sewing machine for you and your needs. There’s no need to stress, however. We have compiled a list of the best overlock stitching sewing machines below.
